Protection is about reducing vulnerability to or risk and harm arising from GBV. A well co-ordinated protection approach can prevent incidents of GBV from occurring and/or provide appropriate and compassionate responses to survivor needs.
Components of effective prevention strategies may include: transforming socio-cultural norms, with an emphasis on empowering women and girls and working in partnership with men and boys; rebuilding family and community structures and support systems; designing effective services and facilities; working with formal and traditional legal systems to ensure that their practices conform to international human rights standards; and monitoring and documenting incidents of sexual and gender-based violence.
The documents below detail prevention activities aimed at potential perpetrators, potential survivors, and those who may assist them.
