The earliest projects to address GBV were generally small in scope and focused on survivors of war-related sexual violence. Organisations usually provided services through ’stand alone’ programmes which were often short-term, ending when funds were spent.
Within the last few years there has been a conscientious effort to improve service delivery, through increased data collection, social research and use of findings from periodic monitoring reviews and final project evaluations.
Organisations have focused on developing comprehensive and long-term responses that include health care, emotional support, social reintegration, as well as a focus on police and legal intervention.
Programmers are also improving and developing their prevention strategies, focusing on including men and boys in the fight against GBV and promoting community involvement in raising awareness at international, national, and local level. Examples of some of these initiatives are detailed below.
